About the Session

The Black Health Academy founder, Lisa A. Smith, breaks down why we must eliminate dairy from our diet to achieve optimal health and longevity.

About the Presenter

Lisa A. Smith is a serial entrepreneur, nutritionist and professional speaker. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a masters in business administration. Lisa is the executive director of the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group, the author of The Plant Based Foodie, creator of the signature P.H.A.R.M. TO TABLE plant based coaching program and founder of The Black Health Academy. Lisa is a highly sought after speaker and presenter on plant-based nutrition, holistic health and entrepreneurship who epitomizes what it means to be a passionate community leader.

About the Session

The ABCs of Dumping Dairy is a brief overview of some of the ALTERNATIVES to dairy, the BENEFITS of dumping dairy and choosing plant-based alternatives, and the CONSEQUENCES of eating dairy. You'll learn to make three quick and easy homemade dairy alternatives, including soy yogurt, nacho cheese sauce, and caramel pecan nice cream.

About the Presenter

After reaping the benefits of a plant-based diet for over 18 years, Sahrah decided it was time to share the joy of excellent health and great food with the rest of the world. As a Licensed Food for Life Instructor for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine and certified holistic nutritionist, Sahrah unites her passion for teaching and cooking to empower others to discover a healthier lifestyle. Sahrah created Minds on Meals, which provides cooking and nutrition education, to help people transition to a vegan diet. In her classes, Sahrah shares research-based nutrition and health information, cooking demonstrations, and helpful resources.

So many studies are published about how our food choices impact our health, and it can be confusing to separate truth from misleading headlines in articles. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight the impact of dairy on health by using 4 key tools to evaluate research studies.

About the Presenter

Dr. Tracey McElwee is a Professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She has expertise in developing, implementing, and disseminating interventions for reducing the burden of obesity and food insecurity in low-income communities. Her goal is to promote health across socioeconomic levels, with a focus on nutrition promotion for racial/ethnic minorities and families. Dr. McElwee has extensive experience in applying qualitative and quantitative methods to understanding various cultural practices and reasons underlying behavioral health and food choices among minority ethnic groups, low-income families, and historically oppressed groups.

Join Jessica for a showcase of all of the dairy-free options that you can find in grocery stores - from plant-milks, to butter , to sour cream and more! Plus she'll show you simple methods to prepare vegan versions of parmesan cheese, hemp milk, ranch dressing, and mozzarella cheese sauce at home.

About the Presenter

Jessica Carter is a vegan recipe developer and wellness educator on a mission to make plant-based eating more accessible for everyone. She is Director of Programming and Partnerships at Afro-Vegan Society, where she creates, curates, and coordinates digital workshops and resources that highlight how plant-based living can improve the health, environment and communities of people of African descent. She created her plant-powered brand, Love Vegan Soul, to explore global flavors, ingredients, and plant-based traditions. Her recipes have been featured on FOX45 Baltimore, Let’s Talk Live, and Good Morning Washington.

Brenda Sanders interviews JoVonna Johnson-Cooke about how communities are targeted by the Dairy Industry and the problems with dairy consumption.

About the Presenters

Brenda Sanders is a vegan food justice activist who Co-Founded Thrive Baltimore, a community resource center that offers free classes, workshops, cooking demos and other programming that supports people in living a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle. She’s also Executive Director of Afro-Vegan Society, a nonprofit organization that provides resources to people in marginalized communities to assist them in transitioning to veganism, Co-Creator of Vegan SoulFest, an annual festival that celebrates culture and all aspects of vegan living and Co-Owner of The Greener Kitchen, a vegan deli and food distributor that produces plant-based foods that are both affordable and accessible.

JoVonna Johnson-Cooke is owner and co-founder of MaituFoods, LLC, a vegan meal delivery service and vegan nutrition education hub. Through MaituFoods, she is working to develop culturally appropriate and accessible educational materials that highlight the benefit of healthy nutrition through a vegan diet. The MaituFoods’ Mother’s Meal Program works to provide women, especially those in modest means households, with the knowledge and guidance to achieve a healthy pregnancy and optimal postpartum recovery through a vegan meal and nutrition program. The overall mission of MaituFoods is to honor the art of food rituals, and to serve humanity in a way that promotes the least harm and the most good for people, animals, and the environment. 

 

JoVonna is also Executive Director of Awali, a Veganic Homestead and resource center.
